The Holy Reflection Rosary: The Sorrowful Mysteries (Tues/Fri)
The Catholic Church holds there is “No Salvation Outside of the Church” as “all salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is His Body.” “Hence, they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it.” (CCC 846)
The Catholic Church recognizes those faithful who call themselves Christian though they do not profess the entirety of the Catholic faith. Nonetheless, the baptized faithful who are joined to the Catholic Church, although imperfectly, may also be saved. “With the Orthodox churches, this communion is so profound that it lacks little to attain the fullness…” (CCC 838) Other properly baptized Christians while part of the body have differing levels of truth, and unlike the Orthodox have no opportunity to receive the Eucharist which is the Source and Summit of the Christian life.
The Church also recognizes that in other religions there can be authentic “seeds” of truth—preparations for the Gospel—while distinguishing the fullness of truth in the Church from the error of these faiths which obscure God’s image.
The Catechism teaches that those who have not yet received the Gospel are still related to the Catholic Church which:
· recognizes her unique bond with the Jewish people who initially received God’s Word and were part of the old covenant fulfilled in Christ
· acknowledges that Muslims profess the faith of Abraham and adore the one, merciful Creator. However, misunderstand God as the Holy Trinity, disfiguring the nature of God
· affirms that those who through no fault of their own have never received the gospel, but who nonetheless follow God to the best of their understanding, that they too may be saved.
While the normative path to salvation prescribed by Christ is through His Church, the Catholic Church recognizes through His Mercy, it is the will of God “who wants all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Tim 2:4) God alone can judge the hearts of men and may bring salvation to any of those that choose to be His people.
