Charlie Kirk, Catholic Colleges, and Pride Month

In June 2023, Charlie Kirk made a bold but sad statement when he saw a “Catholic” University promote the sin of pride. It has been a common trend with many Catholic institutes that don’t protect their identity.

John Yep, President of Catholics for Catholics, shared a personal text exchange he had with the late founder of Turning Point.

Kirk: “Stuff like this prevents good people from converting like me,” [Referring to Catholic institutes promoting the sin of pride.]

Yep: “Charlie, Your righteous anger at this would make the God Man proud…for it was the Savior himself who found His Father’s house…full of a den of thieves. Yet instead of leaving it…He cleaned up the house and threw ‘em out…restoring ‘ortho-doxy’…Greek for ‘correct teaching’ back.” I cannot thank you enough for the example of Faith you do show for you are more ‘Catholic’ than most Catholics. At the same time…it’s [sic] simple,” Yep continued.

“The US is full of people and leaders who stand for everything the US is not. If I looked at the Bidens and Obamas to determine if I wanted to become American…I would run the other direction. Instead….I look to the documents our Country is founded on…and thereupon make my choice to be and die if necessary…to be an American.”

“It’s [sic] no different in the Catholic Church. The place is full of sinners…but the doctrine is solid with an intellectual arsenal able to answer any challenge posed to it…and with a roster of ‘Founding Fathers’ who gave blood defending it.”

“One day I predict [you’ll] join and become even greater than you are now. In the meantime, keep up the good work. Pray for me as I do for you daily here at St Bernadette.” Yep finished.

At one point, Charlie was considering becoming a Catholic. Unfortunately, many of the Catholic Universities that promote pride are the reason why they turn away potential converts. Towards the end of his life, Kirk attended Daily Mass and wore a St. Michael medal even on the fateful day in Utah.

Fulton Sheen reminds us, “There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church—which is, of course, quite a different thing.” In time, Kirk would have discovered that Catholicism ran deeper than its institutions in name only.
