6 ways to spend birthdays with Jesus

A birthday isn’t just a number or date — it’s a tender time to remember how God knit us in our mother's womb.

It's a time to review our struggles and triumphs -- and see how God intervened in every scrape. When we imagine a birthday with Jesus, the day becomes less about candles and cake. It is a moment to breathe, to find the grace and growth in our lives; and remember how He has been there every step of the way.

1. Gratitude. God’s fingerprints are everywhere, especially in the hardest places. If we review previous 1-year goals, many have wandered into unknown territory. Yet, notice the quiet courage He placed in us to overcome.  Many are the small surprises He tucked into ordinary days to carry us through the storms we never expected to survive. Gratitude becomes worship, and worship becomes joy.

2. Conversation instead of wishes. Instead of wishing over candles, we share what we hope for, what we fear and what we long to become, as we listen for His guidance. Sometimes the answer is peace. Sometimes it’s conviction. Sometimes it’s simply the reminder that we are loved with constant compassion, not because we’re perfect, but because He is.

3. Sharing Joy like Jesus would. If Jesus were sitting at our birthday dinner, He’d turn the celebration outward. Happiness grows when we share:

• Quiet kindness offered to someone who needs it
• Simple generosity that lifts a weary heart
• Soft companionship for someone who feels forgotten

These become birthday candles of their own — small flames that warm the world.

4. A returning to Scripture. Reading Scripture on our birthday is like opening a love letter, written to us before we were born. Verses of purpose, identity, and love take on new meaning when we remember that God made us for this era. His desire and plan for our life is our anchor in Him. Perhaps one daily verse can force the darkness into our rearview mirror.  

5. Joy as Worship. Jesus loves gatherings, meals, and laughter. Celebrating with Him also means enjoying the life He gifted us. Perhaps more gatherings with good food, good people, and good moments is a goal for more than just  today. Joy is not a distraction from God; it’s a reflection of and celebration of His children.

6. Stepping Into another year. At the end of the day, celebrating our birthday with Jesus is about realignment, recalibration and rebooting a more seasoned-self. It’s knowing we’re protected, known and loved. It’s trusting that whatever comes, big blessings or heavy hurdles; He will lift us up, if we ask.

 A Birthday Prayer:  

 Jesus, keeper of our days, receive our meager, humble praise ... for every mercy, soft and pure, for every trial You help endure.

For every tear You gently dried, For every time You stayed nearby. For whispered peace in darkest nights, for bringing us, Your living light.

Guide our steps with sovereign grace. Let holiness, our hearts embrace. Shape our souls in ways unseen, make our weary spirit clean.

And if this year should be our last, detach our futures and our past. If Your will is for us to stay, grace us virtue; send evil away.

If we should go before the dawn, let heaven’s host lead us on. If our next birthday is not for here, send Your angels to take us there.
