Biblical Comparisons of Raiders of the Lost Ark

Summer 1981 got hot with the adventure of a lifetime as Steven Spielberg released “Raiders of the Lost Ark”. The film began an Indiana Jones trilogy of the 1980s.

The film follows Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones, a professor and archaeologist, who goes on a quest to find the Ark of the Covenant. He reconnects with his lost love, Marian, and gets into a dangerous competition with Rene Belloq and the Nazis.

The film has some biblical connections to the film and even powerful metaphors.

Biblical Comparisons

“Invincible Army”

Marcus Brody, Jones’s trusted colleague and friend, quotes a myth that an army that carries the ark is invincible. In 1 Samuel 4, the Israelites are losing a war against the Philistines and decide to bring the Ark to the front lines like a good luck charm or weapon.

Because their hearts are far from God, the plan fails—Israel is crushed, and the Ark is captured.

The Nazis would suffer the same fate. It came down to arrogant curiosity.

“Cover Your Eyes”

In Exodus 33:20, God warns Moses, "You cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live." Even Moses hid his face at the burning bush out of fear.

Indy saved himself and Marian by telling her to keep her eyes shut as the Nazis and Belloq were opening the Ark.

Destruction of Rivals (1 Samuel 5)

Belloq attempted to lead the Nazis in a ritual around the ark similar to what was. He would dress as a high priest described in Exodus 28, which details the specific holy vestments required to approach the presence of God. When God’s divine power broke free, it systemically killed them all.

Avoid Superstitious Idolatry/Respect Divine Holiness

True faith requires obedience. The Nazis treated the Ark of the Covenant as some kind of trophy to conquer the world. They underestimated God’s power.  

When we are careless or ignore God’s commands, it will result in a disaster. God revealed his sovereignty through the power of the Ark.  

Raiders of the Lost Ark is a timeless classic. It is filled with action-packed adventure and has metaphors applicable to how we all must revere and respect God. It also showed Spielberg at his finest when behind the camera.
