Fulton J. Sheen: Every Mother is this
On the day the markets shattered records—the largest IPO in history, a new veil torn open—the world celebrated its own ascent. Yet in the quiet of every tabernacle, another Heart still burns with a fire no valuation can touch.
We chase galaxies, algorithms, and interplanetary dreams. We break barriers in finance and physics. But we leave untouched the one frontier that saves us: the frontier of the heart.
The Sacred Heart stands as the great contradiction—a Heart pierced in a world obsessed with performance, a Heart human and divine in an age trying to transcend humanity, a Heart offering mercy while the world demands modernity and conformity.
The universe expands, but so does His love. The markets rise and fall, but His fidelity does not. The world tears new veils of technology, but only Christ tears the veil between heaven and earth.
Modern man can calculate the thrust needed to break Earth’s gravity, but he cannot fathom the gravity of a God who breaks Himself open.
We understand the physics of a rocket piercing the sky, but not the metaphysics of a Heart piercing the veil.
We can map the orbit of Starlink satellites in real time, but we cannot map the orbit of grace that circles every soul with unrelenting love.
We can tokenize assets, fractionalize ownership, and trade value at the speed of light— yet miss the one value that was never divisible: the infinite worth of a single soul.
This is why the Sacred Heart feels “ancient” to the modern mind. Not because it is old, but because we have lost the capacity for silence.
Noise is the new veil — the noise of markets, data, notifications, and a world that never stops speaking long enough to hear the God who whispers.
Every technological horizon—Mars missions, AI cognition, quantum computing, crypto finance—is an attempt to cross a boundary.
But the Sacred Heart is the only event horizon where crossing it does not destroy you— it resurrects you.
The world is racing toward new horizons, but the only horizon that matters is the one opened when the Heart of God was torn.
On the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, the Church proclaims what the world has forgotten: Love is not an idea. Love is a wound. Love is a Heart torn open.
Christ did not simply die — He opened.
The Temple veil ripped from top to bottom, and with it the last barrier between God and man collapsed.
Hebrews declares:
“Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,”
— Hebrews 10:19
The tearing of the veil is inseparable from the piercing of the Heart — one act in stone, one act in flesh — both revealing the same truth: Grace is no longer guarded. It is given.
The Sacred Heart is not sentimental décor. It is a furnace — the fire that forged Calvary, the fire that melts sin,
the fire that sends a man back into the world with courage not his own.
Every priest who kneels in a Holy Hour is not escaping the world but entering the center of it — the pierced Heart where all history turns.
And so, as the world hurls itself toward new frontiers: as rockets rise, satellites multiply, AI learns, and the global economy tokenizes value at light-speed, the Catholic stands before a different horizon — not the horizon of Mars or markets, but the horizon opened when a soldier’s lance tore the Heart of God.
SpaceX may break the boundary of atmosphere, AI the boundary of cognition, crypto the boundary of finance—but only the Sacred Heart breaks the boundary between death and life, between exile and home, between man and God.
The greatest IPO in history may tear a new veil in the marketplace, but the only veil that ever truly mattered was torn on Calvary. And the only breakthrough that will matter when the last satellite falls silent and the last algorithm sleeps is the breakthrough of a Heart that opened once and refuses to close.
In a universe racing outward, the Sacred Heart remains the one center that does not move.
“The Sacred Heart of Jesus is the ultimate manifestation of Christ’s love —
the place where the pierced Heart opens the Holy of Holies to all,
inviting every soul to find refuge, strength, and renewal.”
Author’s Note
Inspiration drawn from Fulton J. Sheen’s Dublin Priest Retreat
This reflection was shaped in the shadow of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen’s powerful Dublin Priest Retreat — a series of talks delivered some time between (1970 or 1974) that continue to ignite hearts with apostolic fire. In those conferences, Sheen spoke not as a lecturer but as a man whose own heart had been conquered by the Heart of Christ. His words carried the weight of a soul who prayed, suffered, and loved in union with the Sacred Heart.
As the Church awaits his beatification, Sheen’s voice remains prophetic: the Sacred Heart is not a symbol of sentiment, but the furnace of divine love that forged Calvary and forges saints. His retreat teachings remind us that every priest — and every Christian — must return again and again to the Heart that was torn open, for it is there that mission begins, courage is renewed, and grace is poured without measure.
May this essay, in some small way, echo the clarity, boldness, and tenderness of the soon-to-be Blessed Fulton J. Sheen, whose life and preaching continue to draw souls toward the only horizon that does not move: the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
