In his review of the film, Disclosure Day, Professor Daniel O'Connor pointed out that E.T. character was a parody of Jesus.
Like Jesus, E.T. was a benevolent, savior-like figure from above who heals with a glowing finger and returns from the dead and ascends into the heavens (home)..
