How President Lincoln's "A House Divided" speech applies today

"No one can serve two masters. You cannot serve God and mammon."

President Abraham Lincoln’s "House Divided" warning, delivered on June 16, 1858; applies today, if interpreted through a Catholic lens. The slavery he condemned, has deep parallels with attachment to sin. Mr Lincoln argued that a nation cannot survive while half-enslaved and half-free; while the Church teaches the same about the human soul.

• Sin is a kind of interior slavery, a power that bends the will, narrows freedom, and slowly reshapes a person’s desires until they no longer choose the good with ease.

• Catholic moral theology describes this as the erosion of freedom through repeated consent to vice — a dynamic explored in concupiscence and the loss of mastery over one’s own choices.

• Just as slavery in Mr Lincoln’s time denied human dignity and agency, attachment to sin denies spiritual dignity and weakens the will, making a person less capable of choosing the good they were created for.

Mr Lincoln’s warning, "a house divided cannot stand" is a spiritual diagnosis. A soul divided between grace and habitual sin eventually collapses. The church teaches that true freedom is the ability to choose the good. Religion is a freedom that enables us to find grace, grow in virtue and find protection through moral clarity.

In summary, Mr Lincoln’s moral clarity becomes a Catholic call to interior integrity: to reject the slavery of sin, to reclaim our freedom as children of God; and to refuse to let our conscience be split between two incompatible masters.
