The Meanest Thing Anyone Ever Said to Me
I adore my cats. I enjoy their company.
They brighten my day while I read in a chair, watch television in bed, or pray sitting on the floor. Sometimes they lay up against me touching me. Sometimes they just lay near me.
I like to look upon their sweet faces, silky fur, trusting eyes. They are wholly dependent upon me. I give them water and food. I brush them and cuddle them. I keep them safe in my cozy home.
But they can’t do anything for me. All they do is quietly lay before me.
I simply like to have them in my presence.
Is this a glimpse into the tenderness of God?
We are completely dependent upon God—even more, incomprehensibly more of course, than our pets are upon us.
Trying to cultivate interior silence, I may want to pray verbally—to “do something.”
Then I see a cat on the corner of my bed. Not doing anything. Just resting in my presence.
And I am reminded that I can’t “do” anything for God.
Taking pleasure in my cats simply being before me, I am reminded that the Lord may take pleasure in us simply being before Him.
But oh, how much more!
