Part II: God Does Not Care What I Wear at Mass. He Only Cares About What’s in My Heart.

Introduction: In Part I, I set forth a series of questions that ask people to seriously reflect on how their choices of clothing in various settings compare with what they choose to wear at Mass.  In Part II, I set forth some specific clothing that many people choose to wear at Mass, and what motivates them to wear such clothing.

What do you wear?

A. I wear shorts at Mass so I can be very comfortable and also let people see more of my lower legs.

B. I wear T-shirts at Mass so I can be very comfortable and let people see more of my upper body.  Sometimes I don’t even bother with deodorant.

C. I wear Tank Tops at Mass so I can be very comfortable and let people see even more of my upper body than a T-shirt reveals. Sometimes I don’t even bother with deodorant.

D. I wear jeans at Mass so I can be very comfortable, and often when Mass is over, I am ready to engage in more meaningful or more enjoyable activities for me.

E. I wear flip flops at Mass so my feet can be comfortable and cool, and even if my nails are in serious need of some trimming and cleaning.

F. I wear clothes at Mass that I also wear at picnics and backyard barbecues because it’s just not that important to dress any differently for Mass.

G. I wear sports team jerseys at Mass to show my support for the team and hero worship of some athletes.

H. I wear extremely casual everyday clothes at Mass because I want to pretend that I am humble.

“Look, I have to attend Mass once a week and sometimes on a few more days as well, so wearing anything but extremely casual and comfortable clothes would be asking too much.  Besides, God really doesn’t care what I wear at Mass.  He only cares about what’s in my heart, and what I wear doesn’t really show what’s in my heart."
