Your Holiness, What are You Waiting For?
Working Class NYers of the 1970s

PBS' Hard Hat Riot portrays the Viet Nam era mixing of elitism and working class NYers.
Some college anti-war protestors had bought proverbial "get out of jail [Viet Nam] free" cards, leaving military involvement to less "privileged" young men. Also seen was a condescension toward those who went to Vietnam.
In 1959, I was the second child born to my 46 year old Irish born dad and my 41 year old, Brooklyn born Irish-American mom. They would both retire as office workers from Lower Manhattan, years before that area became a target for 9/11 terrorists.
My sister and I would graduate from Catholic grade schools, high schools, and colleges. Religious sisters were in the midst of abandoning their habits.
When I look back, I was unaware that I was part of any group looked down upon by "elites."
