What Bad Weather and a Power Outage Taught Me About God and the Person I Have Become
Praising the Lord and doing it effortlessly is very easy to do when things are going well. When life seems to be going exactly the way we want it to, or even better than we could have imagined, singing the Lord’s praises comes pretty easily to many of us. Furthermore, there are some truly inspiring people who continue to praise God just as joyously when they are having hard times as they do when life is going great for them.
However, not everyone is like that. Lots of us, when faced with serious and heavy problems, tend to question God. We often question why He would allow such things, if He is listening to us, and if He even exists at all. But something that we, as Christians, are called to do is to continue to praise the Lord, and to trust in Him, and not to rely on our own understanding of whatever is happening (Proverbs 3:5-6). That is not easy during times of great distress, but the good news is that there are tips to follow to make doing it then a bit easier.
Kneel
Those who have been to a Catholic Mass know that there is quite a bit of time spent kneeling, which we do as a way of acknowledging that we are in the presence of the Lord. However, we do not have to wait until then to kneel.
Something that might help a person when they are having a hard time praising Him while dealing with difficult periods in their lives is simply kneeling. Doing just that is a way of showing God honor and respect without even needing to utter a word, which is great when we are feeling down and do not have much physical or emotional strength. Also, our bodies doing something may be a great reminder to our brains of who we are doing it for, and why. And if that is true, perhaps it could help give the person doing it a bit more hope, and it might be a small way one can actually strengthen their relationship with God.
Walk And Talk
One of the best things a person can do for themselves is exercise, and that is even more true for those who are struggling in some capacity. And one of the best things about exercise is that not all forms of it are hard. Doing something as simple as taking a walk is a great way for one to improve their physical and mental health.
In addition to that, taking walks can help someone gain a stronger spiritual life. Also, it can give someone who doesn’t feel up to praising the Lord an easy opportunity to do so. They can do it by talking to God, and this can seem easier than a regular prayer because it feels more like a conversation. And this could also inspire a person to look around at nature, remind themselves of the beautiful things that God has created, and thank Him for those things.
This can also boost a person’s overall mood and self-confidence because it can help them realize they have the same creator as their favorite trees, oceans, and other stunning parts of nature. If that thought pops into someone’s mind, perhaps it might make them want to praise Him even more, and with great enthusiasm.
Remember The Words Of Mother Teresa, And Ask Her To Pray For You
When we are in a rough season in life, sometimes we feel much better when we reach out to someone who has gone through the exact same things as us. In addition to that, we can use those people as an example of how to handle the problems that we are experiencing. One cool thing is that if a person is having a hard time praising the Lord at any point in their life and they wish to talk to someone who has been in that spot, there are a ton of people that they can reach out to, including the Saints. While this may be hard to imagine, even Mother Teresa had spiritual troubles.
In fact, this is something she went through for the last fifty years of her life. What is even more interesting is that she told others that the Devil wants to make us believe that Jesus does not love us, and that that is a “danger for all of us.” So perhaps the next time someone is tempted to turn away from God, they should remember her words, and remember that, despite feeling such spiritual dryness and depression, Mother Teresa never stopped helping others and glorifying Jesus. Everyone should follow that example, and those who are facing similar spiritual warfare as she faced can try asking for her intercession. Perhaps her prayers may help one feel inspired to praise the Lord throughout all times in their lives.
It is perfectly natural, when faced with really trying times during our lives, to struggle with praise. That does not mean that something is wrong with us or that we are bad people. But we must never let that stop us from doing it. God is never the cause of our suffering, and He is always kind and loving towards us, so we should always be singing His praises. Also, one good thing is that there are many ways in which we can praise Him that are simple and easy to try.
