These boats are "rafted together." Each vessel is fastened to the next one. When the sailors gather together in the cockpit of one boat, they have to climb over the decks of the other boats to get there.
Living in community means being "fastened" to one another and this requires some rubbing of elbows — climbing around in someone else's space. It is beautiful but can feel uncomfortable and even messy at times.
Meeting together involves sharing our lives and resources. It brings a level of humility because others get close enough to damage our belongings and also observe our imperfections.
