Introductory Prayers

Sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead; on the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

For the Virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity, we pray: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. (3 times)

The Sorrowful Mysteries

First Sorrowful Mystery: The Agony in the Garden — Virtues: Surrender & Obedience

We offer Thee, O Lord Jesus, this first decade in honor of Thy mortal Agony in the Garden of Olives and we ask of Thee, through this mystery and through the intercession of Thy Blessed Mother, perfect sorrow for our sins and the virtue of complete surrender and perfect obedience to Thy Holy Will.

Reflection: Jesus entrusts himself to the Father in anguish. Prayer: Father, not my will but yours be done.

Our Father...

2.       Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I pray.” — Mark 14:32b

3.       “And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch.” — Mark 14:34

Second Sorrowful Mystery: The Scourging at the Pillar — Virtue: Purity

We offer Thee, O Lord Jesus, this second decade in honor of Thy Bloody Scourging and we ask of Thee, through this mystery and through the intercession of Thy Blessed Mother, the grace to mortify our senses perfectly.

Reflection: Jesus bears wounds for our healing. Prayer: Lord, purify my heart, senses, and desires.

3.       “The servant was pierced for our sins.” — Isaiah 53:5

Third Sorrowful Mystery: The Crowning with Thorns — Virtue: Courage

We offer Thee, O Lord Jesus, this third decade in honor of Thy cruel crowning with thorns, and we ask of Thee, through this mystery and through the intercession of Thy Blessed Mother, a great contempt of the world.

Reflection: Christ is mocked as King, yet reigns in truth. Prayer: Jesus, give me courage to remain faithful when faith is difficult.

Fourth Sorrowful Mystery: The Carrying of the Cross — Virtue: Patience

We offer Thee, O Lord Jesus, this fourth decade in honor of Thy carrying Thy Cross and we ask of Thee, through this mystery and through the intercession of Thy Blessed Mother, to give us great patience in carrying our cross in Thy footsteps every day of our life.

Reflection: Jesus carries the Cross and invites us to follow him. Prayer: Lord, grant me patient endurance and loving perseverance.

Fifth Sorrowful Mystery: The Crucifixion and Death — Virtue: Forgiveness

We offer Thee, O Lord Jesus, this fifth decade in honor of Thy Crucifixion on Mount Calvary, and we ask of Thee, through this mystery and through the intercession of Thy Blessed Mother, a great horror of sin, a love of the Cross and the grace of a holy death for us and for those who are now in their last agony.

Reflection: From the Cross, Jesus reveals perfect mercy. Prayer: Crucified Lord, teach me to forgive as you forgive.

Concluding Prayers

Hail, Holy Queen:

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us Pray

O God, whose only begotten Son, by his life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer to Saint Michael: Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Memorare: Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
