Reflection for America’s 250th Part IV: Where Is America Going?

The final part of America’s 250th Birthday reflection will cover where America must go that is pleasing to God and how Catholics can write the next chapter of American history.

In the 1960s, Fulton Sheen aired a TV series that asked a basic question, “Quo Vadis, America?” In it, he talked about the revolutions of history.

One that made America fight for a way to overthrow a crown that governed them, so they could run their own country. The other is the violence for the sake of it, while not aligning themselves with that of the American Revolution.

He would continue to share the most important fact that democracy was created by God. It is found in the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence that all men are given three inalienable rights that no government can ever take away.

While visiting America, GK Chesterton made a striking observation. America “is the only nation in the world that is founded on a creed. That creed is set forth with dogmatic and even theological lucidity in the Declaration of Independence..." His observation points to the fact that the historic document relied heavily on God. It is not the government who give its citizens these rights, but they come from God himself.

America is moving in the direction away from its humble beginnings and embracing not just big government that will take the place of God, but also an evil ideology that has plagued many countries like Russia, China, Cuba, and even Venezuela.

Fulton Sheen warned of this adoption by this nation: “The enemy of the world in the near future is going to be Communism, which is using peace when it can and war when it must, and which is preparing, when Europe is exhausted from war, to sweep over it like a vulture to tear its flesh. When Russia falls, America will be the new seat of Communism.”

The 2026 midterm elections are approaching. There has been a wave of communists who have won primary challenges for the Democratic Party and are eyeing a congressional seat in Washington. They have no platform, but they want to attack Trump and impose an ideology that was created by the influence of Satan.

How did we get here? The answer lies in what Fulton Sheen foresaw: “It is unfortunately the spirit of many in our own land who would sabotage our national life. There is irrationality in America, for countless are our fellow citizens who are guided by emotion rather than by reason, who go on repeating catchwords and slogans that they never analyze, and who deny there are any basic truths of reason, much less of revelation, by which man can chart the course of his life and discover the goal of his destiny.” 

Communism doesn’t reason but unreason with us. It will also bring about a proliferation of undoing what America was founded on since 1776.

So what must we do? First, we must pray for our nation. Pray that the fear of God is found in every American throughout the land.

We also must proclaim liberty. St. John Paul the Great urged America, “Proclaim liberty throughout the land (Lv 25:10). This tradition poses for all future generations of America a noble challenge: “One Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” This nation must return to God, or it will go down under.

The next 250 years are critical for Catholics. We are seeing the rise of radical Islam, communism, socialism, and even secularism. The good news is a revival has happened that goes beyond the election of Pope Leo XIV.

To paraphrase John F Kenendy, we must ask what our country can do for us, but what we can do for America. Today, as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, let us proclaim freedom in our community. Let us live free that appeases God. Let’s live the truth in all that we do as the light of the world and the salt of the earth.
