Where Is Your Monastery? It Can Be Anywhere.
Here is a video version
I say these 4 foundations are a part of my prayer everyday to practice humility. Am I saying I am humble, absolutely not. Sometimes I really do well and sometimes I fail miserably. That is why it is called practicing humility, like practicing medicine or practicing anything else.
These 4 foundations help me keep my mouth shut when I would really like to say something and also not to gripe, moan and complain about how things don’t go my way.
I think of how Jesus when going through the passion he did not complain and did not take matters in his own hands. He did GOD’S will all the way through without complaining. Which is what I try and do. I emphasize the word try.
The first foundation I start with is, “I am nothing.” Of course I am not totally nothing, but by myself I am nothing. Once I start saying, “I am” I separate myself from GOD. Because without GOD nothing exist at all. Life does not exist, the cosmos, time, space and all of eternity could not exist without GOD. GOD is everything and in everything. There is nowhere that GOD is not. So without GOD I am nothing. I am a part of everything, a small piece of creation. So knowing that GOD is everything and owns everything is a great starting point.
The second one is, “I know nothing.” Like is says in scripture, “A mans own wisdom is foolishness in the eyes of GOD.” Just think all the knowledge we obtain usually comes form somewhere else. We learn things from the experience of someone else’s experience. We vary rarely come up with any brand new knowledge. Knowledge is handed down from generations of humanity. And everything I have learned about GOD and Jesus did not come from me it came from the Holy Spirit.
And even all the knowledge I think I have is still nothing compared to what is really happening in creation and eternity. From that standpoint I know very little and everything I know did not come from me. The less I know the better off I am spiritually speaking. I don’t have to know everything and I don’t want to know everything.
The third one is, “I have nothing.” This one is so very true and hits home. Everything in life and even life itself is temporary. GOD owns everything we are just using things in this life for our journey while we are here. GOD created all things life and eternity, which means everything is his not ours. We are just using everything for a temporary time period however long or short are lives are. In the end we can’t take anything with us. So if we can’t take anything with us that means we don’t really own anything. If I don’t own anything then I don’t have to worry about losing anything.
The forth one is, “I can do nothing.” The only reason we are we can do anything at all is because GOD created everything. Without GOD we do not exist. So everything I do is the result of GOD’S creation. I can do nothing on my own. I do not exist all by myself, that would be impossible. Of course I make my own decisions but it all boils down to our being and lives are in GOD not outside GOD. We cannot exist and live outside GOD. Everything we do in our lives is the result on living in GOD’S world.
So these 4 foundations help me to keep my mouth shut and help me not to complain. Of course at times I fail but I always get back up again and keep practicing.
