Trained to Shoot (poem)
One hot summer day our dog, Roar, was barking nonstop in the backyard. She cornered a snake!
It was after a thunderstorm when the snakes climb.
Roar kept attacking and biting the fighting snake.
At one point she flung the snake and it went soaring! Snake, and snake guts, flew high through the air.
Roar kept attacking the snake until she finally succeeded in her noble mission. My mother tried to tell Roar that the snake was dead, but Roar maintained her most admirable dedication, biting and chewing the coiling creature.
The dog didn’t know that the snake was dead because the snake kept moving.
Snakes can keep moving after death! If my mother hadn’t said so, then I too would have thought that the snake, twisting and turning, was still alive.
The dead snake looked lively—what an illustration of evil’s deceptive nature!
The devil is a liar. "…When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies." —John 8:44 NRSVCE
The pleasure of sin does not last.
Like the life of that ill-fated snake.
