My tragedy is not your politics
Before we get started, please the previous article, here; A study of Hebrews part 7, and please check out my latest on Locals, here; I was one of the people searching for Javeayah Harris
So, I'm going to do things a little differently. I am (as always with this study), include all of Hebrews 8 (Hebrews 8:1-13, your versification may vary). But, I want to do some exegesis on it before I give the entire text (remember, I type up the entire thing from my personal Bible, any mistakes in it, are 100% my fault).
But, I want to focus, first, on this; “Now of the things which we have spoken, this is the sum: we have such a high priest, who is sent on the right hand of the throne of majesty in the heavens:
So, this is important. Because, well, where is Jesus? At the right hand of the Father! (Matthew 26:64, Mark 14:62, Luke 22:69, Acts 2:32-33, amongst a whole bunch of others). Now, what does this mean? Well, it doesn't literally mean that Jesus is sitting in a literal throne in heaven. What it does, however, mean, is that Jesus has power that others don't have.
Now, since we read that verse, let's read the next,
“A minister of the holies, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord hath pitched, and not man”.
So, remember, Jesus is our high priest, who intercedes with us, because he is at the right hand of the Father.
So, we're going to skip a little bit, because I don't want to be writing this all day, so, let's go down a bit, in the Douay Rheims, it's verse 6. I really wish someone would update DR versification (I talk about that, here; The Douay Rheims Bible could really use an update)
“But now, he hath obtained a better ministry, by how much he is also a mediator of a better testament, which is established on better promises”.
Well, what is that better testament? The covenant in his blood. (Matthew 26:28, 14:24, Luke 22:20, 1 Corinthians 11:25). The Testament that was won at Calvary. And yes, I do believe this is ultimately a Eucharistic meaning, and we'll get there next week.
Without further ado, here's the entirety of Hebrews 8,
Now of the things which we have spoken, this is the sum: we have such a high priest, who is sent on the right hand of the throne of majesty in the heavens: A minister of the holies, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord hath pitched, and not man. For every high priest is appointed to other gifts and sacrifices; wherefore it is necessary that he also have some thing to offer. If then he were on earth, he would not be a priest: seeing that there would be others to offer gifts according to the law, who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things. As it was answered to Moses, when he was to finish the tabernacle: See (saith he) that thou make all things according to the pattern which was shewn thee on the mount. But now, he hath obtained a better ministry, by how much he is also a mediator of a better testament, which is established on better promises. For if the former had been faultless, there should not indeed a place have been sought for second. For finding fault with them, he saith: Behold, the days shall come, saith the Lord: and I will perfect unto the house of Israel, and unto the house of Juda, a new testament: Not according to the testament which I made to their fathers, on the day when I took them by hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt: because they they continued not in my testament: and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. For this is the testament which I will make to the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord: I will give my laws into the mind, and in their heart will I write them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people; And they shall not teach every man his neighbour and every man his brother, saying Know the Lord, for all shall know me from the least to the greatest of them: Because I will be merciful to their iniquities, and their sins I will remember no more. Now in saying a new, he hath made the former old. And that which decayeth and groweth old, is near its end”.
