The Beatles & the Communion of Saints

The Beatles sang, "I get by with a little help from my friends..." in their 1967 song, "With A Little Help From My Friends." 

As Catholics, we can get by with help from our beloved friends, the saints. 

The saints are our older siblings, our mentors, our heroes, our inspirations, our role models.

Anything we might not have had growing up and needed or wanted, like a mentor, an admirable coach, an inspiring teacher, a wise aunt or uncle, a protective older sibling…We can find in the saints.

Something impactful I remember from my journey to Catholicism was said in an episode of The Journey Home with Marcus Grodi.

I don’t remember the episode or interviewee; someone said, “The saints are more alive than we are now. They are aware of and concerned with what is going on in the world.”

I shared that quote with a Protestant who didn't believe it.

His loss.

I have gained parents in Mary and Joseph! I have found a treasure trove that offers a gem (or multiple gems!) for every occasion. 

The Communion of Saints is a lived experience for us as Catholics. 

The Beatles sang further, “I get high with a little help from my friends…”

Setting aside what may have been meant in that lyric...

We can “get high,” in the sense of journeying upward toward Heaven, with help from our friends, the saints.
