HOW DOES ONE KNOW THAT THEY ARE CHOSEN?

In Catholic teaching, a faithful servant of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit, can discern the graces and the type of service God desires through a combination of being attuned to the Holy Spirit through Prayer, a strong sacramental frequency and commitment, Scripture, and the graces and inspiration from the Holy Spirit.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit include supernatural graces that include continuous strong urgings of the Holy Spirit. When we follow these urgings, other graces are bestowed, including understanding, wisdom, fortitude, counsel, piety, and fear of the Lord. Those who are called and follow are enabled with discernment, courage, and a strong love and desire fortified by love for God and to be of service to Him. When these gifts are active within one who has been “called”, they reveal the direction and nature of God’s will.

Prayer leads to an interior listening that opens the door to thoughtful understanding. It is a powerful emotion and prompts the heart to stay ever-engaged in faithful prayer. Frequenting the Eucharist with a thorough examination of conscience, a sincere Lord’s Prayer, a faithful servant can fully remain open to their heart while enjoying the Spirit’s motivations. We would then be readily guided regarding actions and service in a way intended by the Holy Spirit.

Isaiah 11:2-3, The spirit of the Lord will give him wisdom and the knowledge and skill to rule his people. He will know the Lord’s will and honor him.

And he will find pleasure in obeying Him. He will not judge by appearance or hearsay.

Ephesians 2:8-9, for it is by God’s grace that you have been saved through faith. It is not the result of your own efforts, but God’s gift, so that no one can boast about it. God has made us what we are, and our union with Christ Jesus has created us for a life of good deeds, which he has already prepared for us to do.

Our sacramental life becomes a Channel of Grace

Through the sacraments, especially Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion, we find the means through which God’s grace is given. With continuous and regular participation in the sacraments,

our soul is strengthened, which is necessary to receive and act upon God’s will.

The Church, as the Body of Christ, interprets Scripture and the gifts of the Spirit in the context of the entire Gospel. A faithful servant would be wise to seek the Church’s guidance, as it assists in discerning God’s will in light of the whole truth.

Each of the above steps is necessary to live the word of God, receive the Holy Spirit and be guided into a life of faithful service to God.
