St. Titus Brandsma: The Gentle Martyr

Saint Titus Brandsma (1881-1942) was born with the name Anno Sjoerd on February 23, 1881, in the Netherlands. He grew up to be a gentle and intellectually gifted young man. His deep love for God and interior prayer drew him to become a Carmelite friar. His novitiate began September 22, 1898, and he took vows as a friar on October 3, 1899. He was ordained a priest on June 17, 1905. 

With his Doctor of Philosophy, he taught at universities and wrote over 700 articles. He lectured in many countries as a well-respected and a sought-after speaker on Carmelite spirituality. As rector of the Catholic University of Nijmegen and advisor to Catholic journalists, he was able to serve many people. 

He also served as the editor of a newspaper and encouraged newspaper publishers to resist publishing Nazi propaganda. He was not afraid to tell the truth. Being such a bold and outspoken opponent of Nazism, he was targeted and arrested.

His arrest led to imprisonment at 2 separate labor camps, then subsequent transfer to Dachau concentration camp where he was housed on the clerical block. He endured their inhumane treatment calmly while gently ministering to other prisoners and praying for the Nazis’ conversion. He encouraged the other prisoners to pray for their conversion as well: “Do not yield to hatred. We are here in a dark tunnel, but we have to go on. At the end, an eternal light is shining for us.”

On Sunday, July 26, 1942, he was martyred by lethal injection by a nurse to whom he gave his rosary. She later converted and testified on his behalf to aid his process of canonization. This was the same year that Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) was martyred.

Pope John Paul II beatified Titus on November 3, 1985, and he was canonized by Pope Francis on May 15, 2022. His feast day is July 27th. Known as “the gentle martyr,” he is the patron saint of Catholic journalists. 

Heavenly Father, may we defend the teachings of the Church, especially on human life and dignity, with love and gentleness as Saint Titus did. Saint Titus, pray with us for this and all our needs.
