The Seven Last Words of Jesus from the Cross - Part 7: The Seventh Word
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5
When this year began, I chose “submission” as my word for the year. I foolishly thought it would be simple: I would just let God take the wheel, sit back, and enjoy the ride. But as it turns out, relinquishing control is one of the hardest things a heart can do.
Surrender requires courage. It means letting go of the armrests, silencing my inner backseat driver—the one constantly asking, "Where are we going?" and "Are we there yet?"—and truly trusting the One who is driving.
For a long time, I was comfortable in my cozy corner of the internet. I was perfectly happy sharing my blog with just a small, faithful circle of family and friends. But God didn’t want me to stay comfortable; He wanted me to step out in faith.
First, He used my husband, who gently pointed out that it was a shame I wasn't sharing my writing with more people. I brushed it off. Then, an Emmaus sister out of the blue sent me a link to Catholic365, echoing the exact same message. Still, I resisted. Fear kept telling me to stay safe and quiet. But God’s call is persistent, and running from Him only leaves us restless. Finally, after a series of undeniable holy nudges, I pushed my fears aside, filled out the application, and hit "send."
I thought that was the grand finale of my surrender. Over 75 articles later, I figured God and I were even! But God doesn't call us to surrender just once; He calls us to live in a continuous state of trust. And now, He’s asking for another leap of courage: He wants me to go on live public radio and share my journey out loud.
Writing feels safe to me. I can edit a draft ten times until it's just right. But speaking live? There’s no dress rehearsal. No backspace key.
My initial reaction was a firm, "Absolutely not." But that familiar, gentle nudge returned to my heart: “You promised to submit. Do you trust Me, or don't you?”
Real submission isn't passive; it's an act of dynamic trust. If I truly believe that God is in control, then nervousness and fear have no authority over me. Courage isn't the absence of fear—it's choosing to surrender that fear to God and stepping forward anyway. So, I said yes.
As the day approaches, am I nervous? Humanly speaking, absolutely. But deep in my soul, I am anchoring myself in surrender. I am trusting that God will send the Holy Spirit to speak through me, so that I can be a true, humble witness to His grace. May it all be for His Greater Glory.
