SSPX, Tribalism & Today's Saint

Jerusalem — 31-33 A.D.

Today’s saint—Gamaliel of Acts 5:34—speaks in Scripture during a critical moment. The apostles face hostility from religious authorities. The Sanhedrin’s top leader, Gamaliel steps forth with a calm, almost alien-like message in our modern age. His counsel is simple: If this movement is of God, it will endure; if not, it will fade.

Today, we live in a world carved into tribes. Online discourse fractures us into circles that rarely touch; SSPX, Trads, Novus Ordo, social justice vs. doctrine-focused, AI vs. Luddites and spectrums of religion/politics ad infinitum. Some draw Venn diagrams to find common ground. While this appeals to human reason, the Holy Trinity does not have walls. Enter Gamaliel’s humble counsel. His wisdom does not involve diagrams, fences, pigeonholes or overlap—he simply asks to let Truth breathe.

• Lines and circles remind us that no one has the whole picture.
• Someone outside our circle may carry a grace we need and/or vice versa.
• Humility grows — when we admit God is bigger and smarter than our tribe.

St Gamaliel’s discernment created a place where Pharisees and Apostles became co-seekers of God’s will. His restraint enabled respect for what humans could never understand. He presents an interesting approach for navigating tribalism today.

Gamaliel’s Goals

• Discernment requires delay. He did not rush to condemn. In a culture of instant reaction, his hesitation was solid, spiritual discipline.

• Mercy is not weakness. Gamaliel protected the dignity of all debaters and their gift of free will. Fast forward, this applies to every Christian, Islam, Jew et al—with exceptions for stations in life. We are to love God and neighbor and let Him sort out the rest.

• Truth reveals itself over time. Gamaliel trusted God’s sovereignty more than human superiority. When we are guided by the Spirit and not factions, tribal tensions relax.

For God, nothing is impossible and holiness grows in unexpected places. For example, the Saul-to-Paul story was 100% God. Sometimes the most faithful response is to wait for God to work. Might some souls have a St Paul-moment in their future? Might we?

God’s passive will, allowed this to happen. In an age of fear and noise, Gamaliel offers the sacred pause, to let God speak before we do. His wisdom becomes the surrender-map for future unity, charity and peace. When we step away from our lines, circles and boxes; St Gamaliel can lead us to God’s holy will.

Prayer for Patience

Lord, make us like Gamaliel—calm when tribes collide;
with hearts that look beyond the lines, so mercy can abide.

Teach us holy hesitation, a pause that waits for You.
The patience to discern Your work, before we claim what’s Truth.

Venn circles draw their borders tight, so charity feels thin.
Remind us grace is surest, where walls do not begin.

Let factions fade like passing storms, and demons end their clutch.
Lord, guide us to that place and time, where hearts can someday touch.
