Djonai Carrington and Selfish Ambitions

Fans of the WNBA may have been following the phenomenon of rising star Sophie Cunningham. She has been the subject of viral memes with her signature cheering and pointing.

Recently, Cunningham was a victim of a major foul that could’ve potentially injured her. During a game between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever, Cunningham was mauled to the ground by Djonai Carrington. Carrington was called for a major foul, ejected from the game, and took it to social media to claim “White Privilege”. Yet, she remains vague as to what she meant.

Both players come from interesting backgrounds and represent two different personalities that exist in the league.

Cunningham grew up on a farm in Missouri. She recalled how hard her family went through during the 2008 recession. She went on to play for Missouri, became the face of the girls’ basketball program and helped end the NCAA tournament for the first time in a decade.

After four years, Cunningham was a three-time First-Team All-SEC selection and a Third-Team All-American. She finished as Missouri's all-time leading scorer with 2,187 points and also set the school record for free throws made.

In 2019, she was drafted into the WNBA by the Phoenix Mercury. Six years later, “Spicy Sophie” was traded to the Indiana Fever while becoming teammates with rising WNBA star Caitlin Clark.

As for the latter, it can be summarized as the 180 version. Carrington took a long and winding road to get where she is now. Two knee injuries had a part in slowing her path to professional basketball.

She first began playing for Stanford. She first came off the bench as a freshman for a team that reached the Final Four and won the Pac-12 Tournament. By her junior year, she became a full-time starter and averaged 14 points and 7.5 rebounds. By her senior year, a knee injury limited her to only playing four games. She still graduated with degrees in psychology and African and African American studies. She also received a medical hardship waiver, giving her another year of eligibility.

She entered the transfer portal and played for Baylor, playing only one game. In 2021, she was drafted in the second round of the WNBA draft to the Connecticut Sun, building a reputation for her skills on defense in her four years.

Cunningham has a desire to marry and have a family. Sadly, Carrington was involved in a same sex relationship with former teammate and partner NaLyssa Smith. Recently, Carrington accused Smith after their breakup of cheating, which sparked attention on social media.

So, it goes to show who is the best role model for women. For Carrington, all she wants is to be a center of attention. Sadly, many people are falling for it. Whereas Cunningham is an inspiration for women. She is poised, grounded, and a role model. She is also a team player.

Carrington not only committed a hard foul against Cunningham, but she also doesn’t have her priorities straight. The game is more than just about her and the attention-seeking that she envies time after time.

She needs to learn humility like all of us and remember that we all must face the consequences of every action we commit.
