Evolution of the Concept of “Lust” from the Gospel of Matthew to the Present Day
Known as the “Father of the Big Bang theory,” Father Georges Lemaître (1894–1970) is a Belgian priest and physicist who occupies a distinctive and central role in the history of cosmology, mainly for his development of this well-known theory. Amid the monumental shifts in scientific paradigms in the early 20th century, he emerged as an innovative thinker whose insights would profoundly reshape our understanding of the universe.
Asserting that the universe originated from an initial singularity, he proposed that the universe began from an initial singularity, which he called the “cosmic egg,” and on this he built a theoretical framework for explaining its expansion. This notion not only significantly advanced cosmological thinking but also laid the foundation for the emergence of modern astrophysics and for the study of the geometry of the universe (Mitton & Holder, 2020; Drees, 2016).
Because of his background, Father Lemaître was the most suitable scholar to draw connections between many of the 20th-century scientific discoveries and the Catholic faith. When examining scientific questions, he considered issues of faith and, more significantly, reinterpreted the Act of Creation as described in Genesis in light of his studies of the universe. Over the years, Father Lemaître helped reduce the growing gap many scientists felt between Science and Faith, showing that the latest discoveries about the cosmos should strengthen our faith rather than weaken it.
After making his important scientific discoveries, Lemaître also made significant contributions to cosmology, spanning Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity and the later discovery of cosmic rays. In the early 1900s, most scientists believed that the universe had a fixed size and a finite yet unchanging age. This view would probably have remained unchanged if it had not been for Father Lemaître’s work, now known as “the Big Bang theory.” Certainly, he initially encountered opposition from many of his scientific colleagues who, for philosophical reasons, were unwilling to accept the idea of an ever-expanding, constantly evolving universe. In a recently published book on Father Lemaître’s contributions, Dabek (2025) argued that the “hypothesis of the primeval atom,” presented in 1931, ran counter to the prevailing idea of an eternal and unchanging universe
Years later, even though there had been some initial hesitation, scientists eventually validated Father Lemaître’s early ideas as their study of the universe continued. Specifically, Edwin Hubble’s results supported the concept of an expanding universe, and the more recent detection of cosmic microwave background radiation provided strong evidence in favor of the Big Bang. The nature of Lemaître’s work brought about a revolutionary shift in how scientists studied the cosmos. This new viewpoint revealed the duality of human nature: a scientist’s capacity to acknowledge the limits of knowledge and strive for deeper understanding, alongside the need to hold on to faith and reckon with the contradictions posed by empirical evidence.
In many respects, Father Lemaître’s influence goes beyond his pioneering contributions to cosmology. Aside from inspiring new generations of scientists and researchers, his work shows a harmony between faith and reason, a combination he saw as the greatest feature of the human spirit. His life and his ideas serve as a unique catalyst for the discourse between cosmology and theology, which constituted his life’s work and became his fondest ambition. Hence, a great deal of work for those who wish to follow in his footsteps as they endeavor to uncover the secrets of creation and investigate the various ways to answer the numerous questions that will arise during their studies of the universe. This kind of work, though, will call for a deep examination of faith, as faith is regarded as closely connected with science and with the fundamental nature and purpose of existence.
A major aspect of Father Lemaître’s work was his “hypothesis of the primeval atom”. As a precursor to the Big Bang theory, this hypothesis holds that the universe began from a single, very small and very massive atomic nucleus or something similar. The hypothesis, which he proposed in 1931, initially received criticism from the scientific community on the grounds that it seemed to conform to Christian beliefs. Nevertheless, the support given by the Catholic Church enabled him to continue with his research. In 1951, Pope Pius XII explicitly supported the Big Bang theory in a speech and also connected it to the Christian doctrine of creation (De Felipe et al., 2015).
Contrary to popular opinion, the Catholic Church has always supported the development of scientific knowledge in all its forms and expressed its views on major developments in the natural sciences. In its theology of nature, the Church values scientific knowledge of the natural world, as it helps people understand the world and develop even more positive attitudes toward God in all things. In recent years, the Church has consistently underscored the importance of scientific discussion and bridging the gap between Science and Faith-based knowledge. For instance, the Church has approached bioethics and environmental science from a holistic perspective, viewing the human body and the environment as a single, indivisible totality. By supporting certain scientists, the Church has also supported a more comprehensive vision of nature that accepts scientific findings and, even further, situates them within a meaningful understanding of creation and human existence.
The Church contributes to scientific research by offering a wide variety of viewpoints on the universe that can help deepen our spiritual appreciation of creation. Many scientists and religious experts employ creative methods to bring together these two important aspects of human life, assisting the pursuit of truth and improving human existence. There are various examples showing that “scientific democratization”—the collaboration between the Church and scientists—can stimulate new scientific discoveries by sharing insights grounded in religious ideas about the universe, which people are free to interpret in different ways. Thus, nature and its creations can be understood from a rich, detailed perspective (O’Leary, 2016).
In fact, strong evidence of the Church’s endorsement of science can be found in the number of Catholic scientists who strove to investigate and describe the natural world with increasing precision. One example is the botanist Gregor Mendel (1822–1884), whose Mendelian laws of heredity were not recognized by the scientific community for several centuries. Notably, Mendel had a scientific background and conducted his pioneering studies in the abbey garden where he resided.
Another famous example is Nicholas Copernicus (1473–1543), a mathematician and astronomer who led the Copernican revolution (Book One, Chapter 5, above), which replaced the dominant paradigm that affirmed an earth-centered view of the solar system, which featured a stationary Earth at the core surrounded by celestial spheres arranged in a concentric manner and carrying other the Sun, the Moon, other planets, and stars.
Father Lemaître is another revolutionary scientist who emerged in the mid-20th century. His “Big Bang” theory eventually replaced the “Steady State” theory, which held that the universe was eternal and had always existed in approximately the same state (Vanpaemel, 2024). At present, Lemaître’s dual life as a physicist and a priest continues to influence cosmology by asserting that science seeks empirical knowledge of God’s universe. Furthermore, he argues that faith seeks meaning and truth in human existence, laying the foundation for a dialogue between cosmology and faith.
Recent progress in the themes explored by Father Lemaître is paralleled by current attempts to integrate cosmology and theology. The Big Bang cosmology (currently the most substantiated account of the universe) offers original perspectives on creation that are as exciting as those of the traditional steady-state theory. Many scholars have attempted to relate the factors that define the evolution of the cosmos to various spiritual interpretations of creation, divine intervention, and the nature of time. Similar to Father Lemaître’s attempts to view science and faith as separate yet complementary tools, these efforts provide opportunities for varied theological inquiries and a novel platform for dynamic interactions and discussions between theologians and scientists, which could prove as rich as those fostered by Father Lemaître in his era.
Furthermore, the frameworks of the cosmos developed by the natural sciences offer new possibilities for human understanding of nature, God’s actions, the universe, and our role in it. In particular, there is an increasing need for ongoing dialogue between cosmology and theology. To answer questions regarding existence, meaning, and ultimate purpose, one must look into the vast array of data provided by the sciences. Father Lemaître’s Big Bang model of the universe’s evolution has become a fundamental principle of cosmology, suggesting a vast scale of time, far beyond the dimensions of human history.
Indeed, the study of the universe reveals new truths about the nature of God and the process of creation, resulting in new questions about God’s existence, the natural world, and human actions. In this way, cosmology yields a profound and meaningful view of creation and the divine. Moreover, the many contemporary instances of scientists collaborating with theologians can be attributed to mutual respect between both parties despite differences in their methodologies and disciplines. This phenomenon is becoming prevalent across academic contexts that promote such projects, and I argue that these joint engagements between two key disciplines are necessary for strengthening our understanding of the universe and our place in it.
The discourse between scientists and theologians also covers a broad spectrum of issues and has become increasingly prolific in recent decades. This is hardly surprising, given that scientific research and spiritual belief address the most fundamental questions about human existence and the universe’s basic and profound characteristics. This mutual respect has also led to an increase in cross- and interdisciplinary work, fostering an atmosphere in which scientists are encouraged to explore the implications of their work for diverse facets of faith.
At the same time, theologians are increasingly sensitized to modern scientific research, employing cross-disciplinary research, which uses distinct methods to answer individual research questions, as well as interdisciplinary research, which integrates multiple disciplines to address issues that cannot be adequately resolved within a single field. Hence, the numerous discussions between theologians and scientists demonstrate the cooperative spirit and receptiveness to new ideas that characterize not just exemplary scientific examination but also the profound, reflective faith that stems from it.
In conclusion, the convergence of science and faith, as demonstrated by Father Lemaître’s fusion of cosmology and theology, remains as vital today as it did in previous decades. He showed how two disciplines can live together, evolve, and benefit one another. The pursuit of cosmological knowledge and the study of, and faith in, God have gained much from this influential priest, whose life’s work was dedicated to both domains (Dabek, 2025).
