Slothful Nation--The Rise of 21st Century Communism in America

Perhaps a recent Mass reading  should have us rethinking the roots of communism, at least in the United States in 2026,  with the most rotten one being sloth.  St. Paul extorts his brothers and sisters to “shun any brother who walks in a disorderly way and not according to the tradition they received from us.”  He impresses: “For,  we did not act in a disorderly way among you nor did we eat food received free from anyone.  On the contrary, in toil and drudgery, night and day we worked so as not to burden any of you.”  (Second Letter to the Thessalonians 3:6-10).   

 
Promoters of socialism (communism) eagerly attack the stereotypical greedy wealthy while victimizing those with little or no visible signs of support or resources.  This includes immigrants, the mentally ill, addicts, the homeless, and the socially shadowed.  By external appearances, these populations do indeed appear helpless and unable to work for their needs, and in some cases that is absolutely the case.  However, not all in these circumstances lack the cognition and physicality to contribute to their own subsistence.   The vast majority could accomplish even small tasks of labor.   Having advocated for both the developmentally disabled and mentally ill for nearly sixty years, I am well aware of the spirit of diligence and self respect among the most virtuous of these populations.   In the shadow of St. Paul, they are proud of their work, even piecemeal, though some demonstrate giftedness in the arts.

 
Unfortunately, even the physically and mentally able have been propagandized to shun work under the guise of rightful grievance whether racial, sexual, or cultural.   Self pity has replaced self reliance; outward rage has overshadowed prudent self examination.  Major corporations now permit workers to take off time—unpaid but also often unannounced to the detriment of more conscientious workers.  The latest excuse is sick leave for ailing pets!   The irony is that thousands of unemployed or under  employed in major urban areas  have ample energy to tackle law enforcement officers, destroy structures and impede the work lives of their neighbors for hours—if not days—at a time.  So, more than idleness, rebels undermine the industrious.  Also, enter a new class of the disenfranchised:  pampered collegian youth malformed by indoctrinating educrats over a lifetime.

 
Historically, communism has its origins in fanning class warfare and violent envy between the downtrodden working class and the so-called avaricious capitalists.  In 2026,  even if such self righteous anger and envy fuel this movement, I believe that the “engine” of unemployment and resistance to labor has been sheer laziness most egregiously by White beneficiaries of liberal wealth.  Millions in our country, the vast majority being young college students who honed their slothfulness in the comfortability of lenient academics, are either intentionally under employed or work avoidant for myriad reasons. These indolent disrupters rely on performative drama rather than endeavoring to develop and exercise the muscles of reason and logic.  Moreover, if they can convince themselves that other persons disharmoniously accrued millions of dollars, how tempting to continue as standup protesters beyond the dorm and demand rewarding reminiscent of a lifetime of self-indulgence.   Of course, having both a scapegoat and lower class empathy deflects from this novel strain of communistic fodder.  

 
Add to that an extremist political faction determined to destroy the United States Republic and all its inherent pathways to responsible use of free will.   This generation wails about disproportionate distribution of goods and services, but that is a straw man, manipulated for its broad appeal to those groomed for overall disenfranchisement.  The true underlying cause of today’s raging revolt against the establishment finds its nest in an anti-family, anti matrimony cohort of largely self indulgent whiners to avoid both accountability and virtuous independence.  The fact is that the younger generation rejects responsibility for anyone, including themselves and actually seeks a master class.  (I wonder in Karl Marx would be amused or not care a whit, as long as he and the devil got their way.). That these slothful dupes will soon be enslaved has not been intelligently internalized because they do not think beyond the day’s chaos.  Regardless, those of us who possess knowledge, understanding and foresight understand their end.  Will we have the fortitude, though, to help stop the madness?  Nothing about human nature has changed in 2,000 years since St. Paul’s admonishment.  Like the hardworking saint added, “In fact, when we were with you, we instructed you that if anyone was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat.”
