3 Pro-Life responses to Trump’s FDA nomination

The new nominee—to lead the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a pro-life history. On Aug. 19, Trump appointed Dr Heidi Overton—who requires Senate confirmation. Dr Overton has significant support within the White House, benefiting from her close relationship with chief of staff Susie Wiles and a pre-existing rapport with Trump. She has the following credentials.

• Doctorate in Clinical Investigation from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

• A medical degree from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine

• Since January 2025, she worked as deputy assistant to Trump for domestic policy.

• Prior to that, she spent 3-years at the America First Policy Institute (AFPI), a conservative think-tank.

Dr. Heidi has been outspoken about chemical abortion dangers for babies and women, according to her 2023 AFPI brief where she criticized the federal policy that made abortion pills available via telehealth. Below is part of her statement.

“Abortion is corrosive to children, women and society broadly because it devalues and extinguishes innocent human life.” Overton wrote in 2023, “unfortunately, federal policymakers have recently expanded access to abortion pills ... which are far more dangerous to women.”

Response from the Pro-Life Community

Background. National Right to Life, released, “The Status of Abortion in the U.S. 2026.” It is a comprehensive overview of abortion policy, statistics and legal developments at both federal and state levels. Here were their findings.

• Nearly 2/3 of U.S. abortions are chemically induced, driven by mail-order pills shipped to all states, often in violation of state laws or local safeguards.

• Half of the states favor abortion in laws or state constitutions, while 19 states enforce protections for unborn children on or before 12 weeks of pregnancy.

• New research shows abortion pills have far higher complication rates than previously acknowledged, prompting a renewed federal review of mifepristone.

• The Hyde Amendment marks its 50th anniversary and it is estimated to have saved more than 2.6 million lives by preventing taxpayer-funded abortions.

1. Dr. Christina Francis, CEO of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists applauds the nomination.

“We are hopeful that Dr. Overton will reinstate vital safeguards around the dangerous abortion drug mifepristone,” Francis told EWTN News. “Too many tragic incidents continue ... in which women have been left to handle the consequences ... on their own. As physicians, we demand the FDA do its job and reinstate essential safeguards for our patients.”

2. Live Action spokesman, Noah Brandt, is encouraged by Overton’s nomination. Brandt called on her to halt chemical abortion pills entirely, beginning with mail-order abortions. If confirmed, Dr. Overton has the authority to pull the deadly abortion pill from the market completely, thus ending U.S. mail-order abortions.

“During Dr. Overton’s time at the AFPI, she helped lead important work exposing the dangers of chemical abortion … We pray that if Dr. Overton is confirmed,” said Brandt, “that she brings that same courage and leadership to the FDA.”

3. Students for Life Action’s spokesperson Kristi Hamrick, said the following.

“It’s good to have a nominee … skeptical of the policies the FDA has been pushing. But we are not looking for words, we are looking for deeds. The reckless rubber-stamping of chemical abortion pills has implications for babies … mothers and even the environment.”

Hamrick went on to urge Dr. Overton to investigate the environmental impact of chemical abortion drugs in the nation’s drinking water. No one needs to be pro-life to want clean drinking water.

Response from the Pro-Choice Community

Liberal social media i.e. CNN et al, finds fault with Dr Overton’s hesitancy toward recent vaccine science and her paucity of managerial experience.

The senate vote date will be announced once the nomination is formally sent to the Senate and the confirmation process is underway.
