Yesterday Is Gone – We Are Not Promised Tomorrow
We Have Only Today
By Eileen Renders
This reflection of our time here on Earth may sound a bit philosophical, and indeed it is. It is a saying that reminds us to live for today, and in so doing we are best able to realize that our time here is measured, and we have no idea how long we are granted our stay. Therefore, we would be wise to consider our priorities and goals. When this has been determined, we can then best examine exactly how our time might be spent.
For most of us, this is a no-brainer. For if our time here is much shorter than we might have expected (and no one knows the day or the hour), it makes good sense to pursue the eternity promised by our Creator. For we have been told that this eternity in heaven with God our Creator is not a “given.” We must refrain from sinful ways, receive the sacraments regularly, be merciful and kind to others as Jesus has shown us by His own life.
We must and will all be judged according to how we have used our free will, which is what will determine Heaven, Purgatory for purification, or Hell for those who were determined to do what pleased them, to follow their own desires and will, rather than the will of God.
Living each day as our last can remind us of the seriousness of our lifestyle and, for many of us, the possible briefness of our lifespan. To add to that, we can never change or relive yesterday; it is nothing more than a memory. Tomorrow may never be ours; therefore, living today, one day at a time, provides us with a perspective that helps to ensure we remain on track for what God has promised to those who love Him and follow His word.
