What We Are Hearing from Scientists About Artificial Intelligence.
Is There Any Risk That They Could Cause Us To Be Extinguished?
By Eileen Renders
The very idea that robots could carry out the extinction of human life sounded much like science fiction to me. However, it did make me sit up and pay attention. This topic was top News on TV the other night. Yet I was left with curiosity. How could something like this happen? Two Scientists claimed this is possible and could even happen before this decade is completed. They went on to claim that, currently, the risk of that happening is around ten percent. That is basically all that we heard.
But how? Why would that happen? I had to follow up and do some research to grasp a better understanding.
While I do like Artificial Intelligence as a handy, quick Encyclopedia or Dictionary, I am not a fan of robots taking jobs from humans, including how, in many areas, neighboring communities of huge Data Centers are bearing some of the cost through higher electricity bills.
We do not know what major tech companies are doing to solve the alignment problem, nor aware of how the government is handling oversight and regulations. The fact is, controversy and debate are now going on, regarding the real and possible threat involved.
Here is what I found: There are 2 possible scenarios, according to AI experts, that could become a primary theoretical pathway to an AI-driven global catastrophe; the main categories are:
Loss of Control and Misalignment: This is the most feared scenario and is not a “Terminator-style” army of robots, but rather a superintelligent, software-based agent that becomes impossible to shut down. This has a few sub-categories as well.
Human-ending damage. Human Misuse and Weaponization – Before AI goes “rogue” on its own, human actors could leverage near-superhuman systems to inflict civilization-ending damage.
My faith and common sense tell me that this is not something humans should be delving into; God is the only creator, and the only creator with control over His creation. Humans have proven over and over again their capability to choose evil over good through violence and destruction.
Let us together pray that our government will regulate this AI reproduction with control and safety. China is already presenting a day of “Marching robots” by the thousands.
One scenario describes how AI could kill us all (if the worst fears come true): In theory, a powerful rogue AI could evade oversight, replicate itself, and resist attempts to shut it down. That scenario led me to wonder if Satan could become a partner in assisting AI.
