Stations of the Cross (10)
“Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” (Matthew 20:22)
With these words, Our Lord sealed forever the mission and destiny of the Apostles, which is the SAME mission and destiny to which ALL bishops of the Church are ordained:
… not to lord over the Church, as the Gentiles do, but to serve it by giving their very lives if necessary;
… to be the Light of the world, a beacon of CLARITY during moments of darkness, such as we are now living;
… to be the Salt of the earth in order to refresh hearts that have become discouraged by lukewarm shepherds and confusing teachings;
… to baptize and make disciples of all nations, not merely “play nice” with them.
Thank God there are still many bishops who are fulfilling this sacred duty heroically, even in the face of opposition and censure. Their witness and sacrifice are powerful reminders that the Good Shepherd himself is still with us to guide us safely through these difficult times.
Unfortunately, many more bishops have run away, leaving the flock to fend for itself.
They refuse to speak up when error is preached, choosing instead to “Pope-splain” the errors away.
They spend more time tending to finances and politics than providing spiritual support for the faithful.
They are unusually stern with priests and parishioners who dare question obvious attacks on the faith, yet refuse to openly confront the moral decay of our culture.
They look the other way when scandals rear up their ugly heads, and are more interested in saving the Planet than saving souls.
All of which begs the question:
When they celebrate Mass — after the Consecration — do they EVER look at the chalice they are about to consume and ponder Our Lord’s question?
“Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?”
It is incredible that after twenty centuries, so many of them still don’t know what He meant.
St. Paul certainly did:
If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to boast,
for an obligation has been imposed on me,
and woe to me if I do not preach it! (1 Corinthians 9:16)
The time has come for them to decide:
Either lead us in battle, or get out of the way!
