Living Liturgically Part 2: Choosing a Patron Saint
Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the early apostles. They all were regular, average, and imperfect people commissioned to bring the good news. They were a lot like you and I. They had day jobs, families, and one day, Jesus threw a wrench in their plans and asked them to follow Him and make disciples of all nations. They accepted the tall order.
Have you accepted the command, or are you finding reasons that you can’t be used by God in the same way? I do all the time.
Sometimes being used by God feels like something we’re not worthy of because of our brokenness and sinfulness. Maybe we don’t feel like we’re good enough in that we don’t know enough about our faith or we’re not spiritual enough. We look at the people running our parishes and ministries and they somehow seem more worthy of the call than us.
We’ll save the task of discipling for those who are better than us and more committed. We’ll put off discipling until later in life when we are more perfect and grow to be worthy of the call.
Then there are other excuses we make as to why we can’t follow God and be His disciples … day to day responsibilities, no time, tending to our families, leisure, and many more distractions.
My friends: All are called to disciple from wherever they are. All are called to be used by God to bring about His kingdom. Even the broken. Even the sinful. Even the ignorant. Even those with little faith. Even those who find themselves too busy.
Consider what your gifts and blessings are. Consider how you could contribute. Consider those in your life who are in need of a witness. What could you personally offer to the building up of God’s kingdom? How can you make disciples of all nations? What message are you being stirred to proclaim?
