Another Shooting, Are you Serious?
Have you ever viewed a Seinfeld skit and learned to laugh at what is satirical about life’s situations? One can see the obvious scenarios that do exist within a society that can sit back and view what the world sees as real, but then turn off the TV and go about their daily routine of living and forgetting the message that this show just portrayed.
Satire can be used for many purposes and often times we are able to laugh at ourselves watching as through a mirror the obvious situations that can at times become jeopardizing to some, and not humorous to the rest. One such skit showed a somewhat overweight young man being accosted by a crook and then losing his car to this thief, while the actors laughed and video-taped the entire scene. The story landed the four in court because of a law in the town called “the Good Samaritan Law” where people are required to come to the rescue of citizens in trouble from those who would do them harm. Obvious the program created humor, as most satires will induce, and in the end the four were removed from society for a year. The writers did their job making us aware of the tragedies that occur in life when some do not care about the rest of societies’ population.
A news report on CBS recently covered a story about a man in the water and calling for help. A group to teenagers laughed as one of them video-taped the man in distress while the rest laughed and some stated he never should have gone into the water. The man drowned! Not one even called 911, but appeared to enjoy the demise of another human being. This is tomorrow’s leaders? God help us!
This is just one of many instances where bystanders urge the attacks of brutal beatings and do nothing, or watch as a helpless elderly person is accosted, or a woman is raped and others look dumbfounded and wonder why someone doesn’t stop it. They are the someone who could do something; yet do nothing as if action is a no-no today and why should I become involved?
What has become of the world in which moral-seeking persons once followed good conscience and advice from their parents of guardians? Is there no place or vestige of sound principles left? Who are we to blame?
I won’t condemn those who do nothing, but vehemently condemn the very non-actions of too many people today that become silent participants when watching, video-taping, clapping and cheering when another human being is being made a throw-back to the days of the Roman Emperors and treating humans as things for sport.
Where is their sense of compassion, righteousness, and just human concern for a brother or sister in Christ? How many of them do not believe in God, or adhere to an attitude that is hedonistic in nature?
What we have become is not satirical, funny, or even human instinct. It is lower than animal nature and even animals do not treat their own kind like so many humans do to each other. Parts of Sacred Scripture mention that in the End Times man will become like beasts turning on one another. Matthew’s Gospel is unique in the Eschatology discourse found in chapter 24: 1-25, 46. Are we on the verge of predictions from the Bible and are we living in a time of man against man, city against city, and righteousness against satanic powers that threaten our very well-being?
Mt. 24: 8 “All these are the beginning of the labor pains”. Mt. 24: 12 “…and because of the increase of evildoing, the love of many will grow cold. Mt. 24: 13 “But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved”.
