Where is God When I Need Him?
On the American side of Niagara Falls, the colossal sheet of water takes a dizzying leap over a precipice to crash 160 feet below. But between the face of that precipice and the great overleaping rush of water is the vacant space called the Cave of the Winds, where guides lead rain-geared tourists into a thunderous, awesome envelope of spashing spray and mist, what appears to be hardly an arm's length from the crushing downpour of water.
The excitement from the crashing noise and water's rush is not enough to overshadow one's sense of security in knowing that the waterflow will maintain its swiftness so as not to arrow its overarching distance from the observation platform.
It is possible to experience God's peace flowing "like a river" (Is 48:18), even in the noisome and unsettling times in which we live, but only for those who truly trust in the Lord. His ever-flowing love provides protection and security - and consequent peace - even as endless dangers and threats rush close by us constantly. Deep inner peace is available to anyone who has mastered the art of trusting in his love; the classic words of Isaiah 26:3 frame this truth with trenchant poignancy: "You will keep peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you."
Life is an exciting Niagara adventure. When we trust in God's ever-flowing love, he drenches us with his peace and security.
