The Devil Made Me Do It
An Italian abortion advocate, Emma Bonino, spoke in favor of immigration at an Italian Catholic Church recently. The event was sponsored by Caritas Italiana. The pro-lifers in attendance were not allowed to speak in protest, and were removed from the church when they asked questions.
This issue of pro-abortion politicians invited to high-profile “Catholic” events is not a new trend. It has been going on for years, with universities such as Notre Dame inviting then President Obama to address students. President Obama ran on a pro-abortion agenda, including defending the use of partial-birth abortions.
When those who take away the rights of our brothers and sisters before they are born are honored by Church institutions, we witness scandal.
Scandal has the uncanny ability to not just confuse people regarding vice, but to reward those who practice it. By this I mean if the Church allows those who actively promote grave sin to speak or receive awards, then what the Church tells her children is things like abortion aren’t seriously wrong.
Should Charles Manson being invited to a church to speak out against the death penalty? His rejection of it would be in step with Church teaching. We might gasp at the thought of it considering his crimes, but that is exactly what is going on when we invite abortionists to lecture the faithful on immigration. When a Catholic university or church disregards the consequences of scandal, they ignore their responsibility to uphold Church teaching.
It is a moral error to think we can separate actions and beliefs. Associations matter.
I do not suggest that we cannot dialogue with people we don’t agree with, but to take into our Church as an authority figure a politician who outright fights for the right to kill the preborn is a moral deviance that must not be given a bit of respectability.
Mass confusion is prevalent today. Yes, the secular world is misguided because it does not carry the truth infused inside it by the Holy Spirit. The Catholic Church, led by the Holy Spirit, speaks with authority. It is unjust to allow those who murder the truth a place at our podiums.
