1984 revisited?
Look! I just saw God face to face.
“But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.” (Exodus 33:20).
No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and is at the Father’s side, has made Him known. (John 1: 18).
So how can someone announce he has seen God, face to face? Phillip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you and you still not know me, Phillip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” (John 14: 8-9).
How may one see God now face to face, if their eyes are covered with doubt, pride, or insensitivity to what exists in our world, today?
When we die, (of course just in human flesh since the soul will live forever and our spirit or sense of life will go on) our hope is to be in the presence of God and be part of the beatific vision. A rhetorical question? Is seeing God face to face the most obvious need that we believe must be fulfilled when we reach that stature at heaven’s gate? Is this what we’ve been praying for and sacrificing about all these years to answer the mysterious dilemma of what God really looks like? What about the real essence of who God is? I believe many would have an interest in feeling the comfort that arises from seeing the Shepherd who always searched for us when we lost our way, or the strength of carrying us along the sands of life when from our weakness we could no longer walk on our own. And, how about that time when our vision was clouded by our tears as sin seemed to envelop the sense of truth, and He took those entities as the nails penetrated His limbs and His Precious Blood washed away every semblance of pain that was ours to endure. I can’t wait to actually feel His Presence which will give me comfort as nothing ever could, as that is what has sustained me all these years.
Each time any of those scenarios were lifted, we did see God’s face through compassion, combined with Love, Tenderness, Peace, and eyes of Faith that only an understanding God could give. If one thinks about this, we already saw God face to face in our daily walk of faith, using our gifts so freely given for the benefit of others, and praying for the Poor Souls in Purgatory.
Yes, I have seen God face to face. Have you?
