Day 270 – The Presbyters
Today’s reading: Gal 5
Paul makes one final, emphatic argument against the need for circumcision and following the Law of Moses. He argues that Christ has set us free from the observance of the Mosaic Law. He further says that if you embark on following the law, then you are bound to its entirety. He says this separates you from Christ. Then he says:
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is of any avail, but faith working through love.
Thus, through Christ, we are freed from observance from works of the law. Paul goes on to warn that this freedom is not freedom to give into the sins of the flesh. For things like “sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger, selfishness, dissension, party spirit, envy, drunkenness, carousing, etc., which were sins under the Mosaic law are still sins. The freedom we know have is not to engage in sins of the flesh but we are now free that “through love be servants to one another”.
