In earthquake-prone California, some jittery residents have a new twist on their prayer for faith. They no longer pray for faith that moves mountains, but for faith that mountains won't move.
Our generation may well be the most insecure generation in human history. Widespread crime, new diseases, global ecological pollution, the worldwide threat of nuclear, biological, or chemical warfare, the escalating frequency and severity of climactic crises and catastrophes are all threats that make modern life insecure.
Spiritual maturity alone enables the soul to rely on a loving God more than on wariness or protective technology: "The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms" (Dt 33:27). With David's trust in God we can say, "I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety" (Ps 4:8).
King Solomon wrote: "Death is the destiny of every man" (Eccl 7:2). But even death holds no terror for the spiritually secure, who, like Job, have learned how to trust in God's love. "Though he slay me yet will I hope in him" (Jb 13:15). Jesus' words remove death's sting: "He who believes in me will live, even through he dies" (Jn 11:25).
Rest secure. "He grants sleep to those he loves (Ps 127:2).
