Where is the Goalpost?
Have you ever tried going up a "down" escalator? Even if you make it to the next floor, you'll be exhausted.
We spend too much time and trouble going to wrong direction on life's one-way streets, or swimming against the current. It's so much easier (and safer) to "go with the flow." But the surprising thing is that the Lord himself provides the "flow" - he takes the initiative in countless episodes of grace (theologians call this "prevenient grace"). Recognizing God's initiative in all our spiritual endeavors is essential. Jesus says, "No one can come to me unless the Father....draws him" (Jn 6:44). If anyone is seeking God, then it is God who is at work in him.
To cultivate the awareness of and appreciation of God's love in taking this initiative, ponder these five scriptural truths:
1. God is always at work around you (see Psalm 139:7-10).
2. God pursues a continual love relationship with you (see Jeremiah 31:3).
3. God invites you to join him in his work (see John 6:28-29).
4. God reveals himself, his purposes, and his ways (see John 15:15).
5. God lets you experience him as you submit to him (see Ephesians 3:17-19).
