Homeschooling and More...
I recently had a student finish the St. Gianna Childbirth Education "Prep" for Parents and I wanted to share her testimonial with you.
However, first let me back up a little. What is the St. Gianna Childbirth Education "Prep" for Parents and how I came upon writing such a curriculum? (By the way it is an all online course -- though I can teach it in person if someone lives in the Dallas, TX area).
I am a mother and also an educator in more than one way. I educate my children at home and I also help mothers as a doula and educate mothers about birth.
I had thought of a childbirth education program a long time ago; I don't remember the dates. But I had started writing tidbits of how or what I think should be in such a program. I kind of put it aside since I was busy with other things. But, I came back to the idea about a year or so ago. I decided to put all my ideas together and write a course for parents that they could learn with a little help what to expect a birth and some tips and ideas on dealing with hospital situations.
So, St. Gianna Childbirth Course is now "born" and the course does go over two books that are needed. One is titled "Christ Centered Childbirth" by Kelly Townsend and the other book is "Nurturing Touch at birth". I also encourage mothers to also read "The Birth Partner" as an addition if they have time. The above two books, we read through and meditate through. The first book has some great Christian Biblical meditations for your birth experience that you may want to look at. The second book includes rebozo shawl techniques for helping as a tool for comfort measure techniques. We teach the rebozo tool in this online course.
Anyway, I would like to share the mother's testimonial now about our St. Gianna Course:
Mother writes: "I think it was very helpful for us to be more educated about the labor and delivery process. My labor was actually induced, but I managed to do the whole thing without an epidural or any IV pain medication using some of the tips and techniques that we learned. We had also made a short birth plan, based on the information that we learned and what we wanted, that we discussed with our doctor before hand. That was very helpful in making sure that our wishes were respected during the process. Our doctor was awesome and actually got down on the floor so that I could deliver standing/squatting. I had a lot of back labor and knew that laying on my back would be very painful. So because we were armed with knowledge before hand, I was able to avoid laying on my back for delivery. And as a side note, he was so awesome and actually stopped to ask if he could say a prayer before I started pushing :-) Of course we said yes! We had made some affirmation cards and having my husband read those to me during the worst contractions made it so much easier for me to get through them. The poor guy could probably still recite my affirmations in his sleep after reading them to me for an hour straight! But it was all worth it. I am so glad that we took the time to arm ourselves with information and be educated about the whole labor and delivery process. I think it really made a difference in having a positive birth experience and a great outcome post-delivery."
