Day 241 – The Cost of Discipleship
Today’s reading: Luke: 11:27-54
Today we read a passage similar to Luke 8:19-21. In that passage recall that Mary and Jesus’ relatives were there to see him but couldn’t reach him because of the crowd. When Jesus was told that his family was there he said, “My mother and my brethren are those who hear the word and keep it.” Today, a similar event occurs.
As he said this, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked!” But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it! Luke 8:27-28
Notice, Jesus’ response is the same. He repeats his admonition that the blessed are those that hear the word of God and KEEP IT. Hearing, and faith from hearing is not enough. Doing, living right, is required. To those that would try to use this passage to try and diminish the Blessed Virgin Mary the response is the same. Of all the people that ever lived she, above all others, heard the kept it.
Tomorrow: Luke 12:1-31
