The Coming Storm | A Dream About the End
[AN OPEN LETTER TO PRIEST FRIENDS. PLEASE SHARE IT WITH YOURS!]
As you know, most professing Catholics have at least some issues with Catholic teaching, all the more, non-Catholics! Of course, this has real implications in our efforts to see the Kingdom more fully alive in individual souls, marriages, homes, parishes and this region.
We decided to launch a video series called "BRING IT" - where the most controversial questions are raised, where all are encouraged to bring their objections, affirmations and questions. We're beginning with youth-to-youth.
We launched the first episode last week with a most controversial question: Same-sex attraction (BRING IT Episode 1). We did not desire to speak to the choir. Out of the gates, we began paid-promotion to the broadest, secular audience. What would you expect? We expected sparks, if not fireworks... and the opportunity to create an atmosphere of speaking truth with love.
Survey says? So far we're absolutely stunned. As of this writing, with over 3,000 views, there are over 300 likes, and (get this!), 0 disikes!
I'm not sure what to make of it, except to believe it suggests a kind of culture-engaging (evangelizing) approach worth sharing:
(1) A culturally compelling subject undertaken by informed believers who have authentic, loving regard for their audience,
(2) Expression of an earnest desire to foster a culture of great communication (not a monologue = they matter),
(3) Encouragement to bring objections and questions... however controversial and edgy (these are not dividers),
(4) Self-effacing recognition that we ourselves face temptations and challenges that merit self-control (virtue),
(5) Clear and logical illustrations that spell out the principals, making clear God's ultimate concern for us (truth is relevant), and,
(6) Invitation to more fully know God's love and seek His mercy... to journey together (faith).
Simultaneously, we were prompted to initiate live social events we're also calling "BRING IT." These are occasions to break out of our safe zones and boldly "bring it" to the world ("ecclesia"). We've rented an awesome, atmospheric space at our local Firepit Grille (Holland, Ohio) for evenings of beverages, snacks and conversation-- which will be led by Fr. David Kidd and our team. These are great for those with big questions, and those who simply would like to know how best to answer the big questions.
If you live in the region, the High School and College Edition will take place on Thursday, April 5 at 7pm, The Belief and Beverages Night (Adult) will take place on Thursday, April 19, 7pm. We warmly invite you to join us. Your first beverage is on me! But moreover, would you please help us extend this invitation?
