Why do the good die young
In Jesus’ time, a good shepherd
Watched over his flock with a keen eye of discernment;
Guided by his voice, bleating sheep did not stray;
Did not fall into rocky crevices;
Hoofed up mountainous slopes, agile,
Seeking life-sustaining grass to eat;
Knelt on his knees at night to seek peace, safety.
Good shepherds, one in particular,
Jesus Christ, the Son of God,
Became the innocent Passover lamb;
Offered His flesh for His flock;
Created a fountain of life-giving water through His blood;
Established a pathway toward eternal life;
Stretched forth His arms to absolve others of misdeeds, plus one original sin;
Made possible Himself remaining with His sheep for all time,
Gave Himself as Bread of Life;
Conferred grace upon His world of sheep;
Continued feeding His flock, still guiding, still searching;
Added additional shepherds to teach, anoint, feed.
Fathers, teachers, mothers too, pray to follow the Good Shepherd,
Loving and trusting in His mercy;
Protecting those entrusted to them;
Drying tears of sadness, fears;
Enforcing truths with firm resolve;
Discerning ways to govern wisely.
Forging new living relationships with Jesus;
Keeping a watchful heart for poisonous practices;
Being faithful messengers of God’s directions.
“Quiet! Do you hear His voice?”
