Are You An Amusing Catholic?
Ok, in spite of being technically true (relative to humans), I don't really think owning a dog is stupid. But I do have some strong words for our disordered, dog-worshiping culture. Particularly those for whom a certain bumper sticker isn’t a joke, but a reality: “We got rid of the kids. The dog was allergic.”
A word on disorder: If the sun suddenly disappeared from our solar system, all the planets would collide. Similarly, if we don't value the right order of things, our "solar system" will be out of whack.
I would appreciate dogs much more if they weren't increasingly regarded as icons of an underlying disregard, if not contempt, for human beings- particularly little human beings. If they weren't increasingly regarded as their name suggests... the inverse of "God."
In interests of restoring order in our solar system:
Your dog is not your child.
You don't have a "grand-dog."
Your dog doesn't "need" a stroller or cute clothes or any other "let's pretend our dog is a child" accessories.
God did not take on the form of a dog, nor die for dogs.
Your dog could never, ever come close to the value of a child.
With due (great) respect for the organizational muster behind animal mistreatment, we really ought to be more outraged at the suffering inflicted upon an unborn child (or any child) than mistreatment of a dog. (If we can't stand looking at it, perhaps we shouldn't be tolerating it?)
The time we spend "connecting" with our dogs versus with our Creator, instead of seeking to affirm, uphold and defend His image in mankind, is a testimony to our "planets" out of order and crashing.
Whether it's a dog or a device (each of us have to battle our respective disorders!), if we could just get God back to the center, perhaps our marriages, our families, all our human relationships, might be rightly ordered and restored. We might begin to experience the Holy Community corresponding to Holy Communion.
And if you believe this, don’t keep it to yourself. Proclaim IT: ILoveMyFamily.us.
