Finding God in Our Imperfections
We heard many readings leading up to Christmas of angels messaging God's call to Zachariah and Mary. It seems that there are some similarities in how God calls, based on these readings and others in the Gospels. There's a certain anatomy of a call from God. It often encompasses these elements:
1. The vision is revealed, but not the whole picture. Not all the steps.
2. There is a sense of being chosen, like God is selecting you for a specific purpose or role.
3. There is affirmation of you as a child of God. You have found favor. You are special. God blesses you. You see your worth in God's eyes.
4. It may have been something we've prayed and hoped for, but sometimes not.
5. It elicits feelings of fear, being troubled or even disbelief. You may hear "do not be afraid" stirring in your heart.
6. You wonder how it could or will happen. There is some obstacle or cross that must be overcome.
7. It comes out of nowhere. It is unexpected. It's a fork in the road. You didn't see it coming nor did you plan for it.
8. It is deeply personal experience. It happens only to you, and only you can answer. But others help support and encourage us in it.
9. It requires an answer -- which is an act of faith.
10. It leads to joy, reveals God's power, and glorifies Him. It gives birth to something profoundly life-giving.
There's such beauty, wonder and mystery in God's call. It's a journey of faith into the unknown. May this Christmas reveal how God is calling you, and may you experience whatever new life and glorious gifts He hopes to give you through that call.
