The Cardinal Virtues
Words matter.
Anyone who has seen the way news outlets write about abortion will understand why they use words like: abortion providers, anti-abortion protesters, abortion rights activists, abortion foes, access to abortion, and the right to decide. These subtly make pro-lifers out to be heartless and backward and cruel.
This week The New York Times published a defense of abortion. Besides that, there’s a movement called “Shout Your Abortion” that includes positive stories about abortion and has in the works a children’s book about how common and good abortion is for women. The women on their Facebook page are pictured wearing tees that declare: Thank God for Abortion.
Right now there’s a video on the web where a woman discusses her abortion with a child. Abortion is called health care--comparing abortion to going to the dentist and having a tooth extracted. One founder of Shout Your Abortion is on the Board of Directors of The Abortion Care Network and the other is a journalist who writes for Teen Vogue and Glamour.
Needless to say, they are taking a page from Silent No More which posts stories about how women regret their abortions and how the abortion negatively affected them.
The real issue is that the abortionists and their supporters have declared abortion is health care and the unborn children are blobs of tissue and only potential life. For example, in order to get abortion causing drugs (The Pill, RU 486) to women easily, the definition of pregnancy has been changed from the moment of conception to implantation when the tiny child moves down the Fallopian tubes and attaches herself to the uterus.
Recently, a Fetal Heartbeat Bill was rejected by Ohio’s governor because of the Supreme Court’s flawed Roe decision. It’s interesting that Roe took place well before ultrasounds showed us the life of a preborn child. The problem for the abortionists is that fetal heartbeats are detected at six weeks, before women even know they are pregnant, thus the bill would have made abortion rare (a goal of President Clinton). Thus the abortion rights crowd may have locked up their so-called right, but not if the next generation refuses to have abortions.
Obviously, the abortion supporters and life deniers instinctively know they are losing the youth. In the video by the Shout Your Abortion founder, she explains her abortion to a grade-school boy. When asked a question about the woman’s right to abort, the boy answers with the common sense “give the baby up for adoption” option. This makes the woman say then the child would be out there somewhere and she shouldn’t be forced to create a life.
Well, there are two very logical answers to her concerns, the obvious one is she already created a life which she now wants us all to think is okay for her to kill. The second is people have a right to expect a woman who is having sex to put her unwanted child up for adoption rather than society facilitating the killing of her child. As well, people have no obligation to pay for her abortion just because she calls abortion health care.
We need to Shout Your Abortion Is Murder, and tell our our kids and grandkids Thou Shall Not Kill. We need to tell them abortion denies the right to life to innocent kids like you.
Maybe someone should be asking that kid in the interview if he’d be sitting there listening to this woman today if she’d been his mother? Or would he have been aborted?
Words matter indeed.
