World Doula Week! How doulas help families and what is a doula anyway?
Recently, I had to say goodbye to a long friendship with a spiritual director.
I believe he wanted me to let go because I was too attached to him.
He did leave me with the words: "pray always".
He also gave me a formula for praying -- you might say a way to pray mental prayer.
He said prayer is like talking to God -- just go to him in friendship. Tell him you love him.
First, kind of like knocking at the door, God opens the door, you tell him you love HIM very much. Leave all your "garbage" or distractions at the door. If your mind goes to something during below -- just bring your mind back to Jesus.
Then, you say, I am sorry for all my sins against you...
Now, you can pick up a Bible read a short passage or two...for example...
Woman at the well. Jesus walking on water and calming the storm. Pick a picture in your mind. Just be there -- no asking for anything here -- just be with Jesus. This part can be up to 10-20 minutes -- however, long you want to consider your passage.
Next you thank God for your blessings. Thank him for the roof over your head, food, etc.
Next you ask God for something...maybe you aren't well (ask him to heal you); perhaps a relative is sick (pray for this person here); perhaps you are struggling with something (what do I need to do today or this week?) Maybe, you are scared of what is going to come...give God all your worries.
Conclude with asking God to help you in all your tribulations. And thank HIM for this time together...see you tomorrow! By the end of your full meditation you should be spending up to 30 minutes; but sometimes us beginners may not have as much time -- that's fine set a clock or something and do 15 minutes at least...God understands. Now, it is time to make your breakfast (if done in morning) or supper!
So, it was time for me to let go of this great spiritual director, but he has left me with a great legacy of prayer. Reminding me that God is always there for me and my friendship with God will never end.
